This week, we
delve into Arthritis, a menace looming large on our society. And,
we are glad to dedicate it to the wellness of the American society
First, let us take a
peek at our economy.
Consumer Price
Index (CPI)
The CPI in the month of October remained unchanged. The fall in
energy prices (-3.9%) had been offset by the rise in food prices
(0.6%). However, on a year-over-year basis, the index rose by 2.0%
during the month.
Housing starts
The residential construction market was strong despite the rise
in mortgage rates. The housing starts increased by 2.9% in October.
This follows an increase of 4.0% in September. However, the number
of building permits issued increased to 1.973 million in October,
after a dip in September.
Happy peeking!

Marketspeek - Arthritis
- Arthritis
and other rheumatic conditions affect nearly 43 million
Americans. It is one of the most prevalent diseases in the
United States.
- Arthritis
has limited the everyday activities of more than 7 million
Americans.
|
Vital Statistics
- Almost
half the Americans aged 65 and older have arthritis.
- Chronic
pain is a major health problem in the U.S.
- The
total impact of musculoskeletal disorders cost $254 billion,
every year.
- Every
year, nearly 3 million hospitalizations result from musculoskeletal
conditions.
- Musculoskeletal
conditions and injuries result in:
- Almost
100 million visits to physicians' offices
- More
than 10 million hospital outpatient visits
- Close
to 25 million emergency department visits.

| Analysis
- Arthritis
- The American
population seems to be aging faster than ever before. The following
graph provides a thumbnail sketch on the aging factor in the U.S.

- The time
is ripe for geriatric healthcare facilities to grow in line with
the projected rates depicted above.
- The impact
of arthritis is expected to increase as "baby boomers"
become older. Two decades from now, an estimated 60 million Americans,
nearly 20 percent of the population, will be affected by arthritis.
There would be tremendous pressure on the industry, and the likely
changes in the healthcare are:
- Re-emergence
of house calls.
- Technological
advances in Homecare and care for the immobile.

Zydacron,
Inc.
Seymour Friedel and Ken Garofano were happy running their consulting
business. But, all that was to soon change. While on an assignment,
in 1992, to help AT&T develop video conferencing, an idea struck
them to make a better product than the one they were working on.
Along with two other colleagues, they started Zydacron in the same
year. And, there was no looking back since them.
Zydacron got
into the manufacture of video-conferencing systems. A unique chipboard
was developed with utmost flexibility to work on any desktop. Quality,
the quintessential of products, coupled with a custom-built diagnostic
installation package won laurels for the company. Small wonder that
it made $2 million in the first year of operations.
Backed by investors like Clarion, Needham and Company, Zydacron
relentlessly pursued newer concepts. One of them being a productline
to provide superior and dependable connection between the video
conferencing system and the telephone.
Zydacron is a classic tale of entrepreneurial success that had all
the bare essentials for success:
- Passion
for innovation.
- Backing
of investors.
- Undying
quench for quality.
- Need-driven
products.
